What Is Asthma?Asthma is a Greek word that means applying force to breathe. Asthma is a respiratory disease condition that develops as the the lungs become hypersensitive to any substance that is inhaled called an allergen.
An allergen could be any thing like exercise, cold air, change of weather, pollen, fumes, smells, gases. dust etc. These allergens or even one of them can trigger asthma. The internal walls of the airways become inflamed/swollen which narrows them making breathing difficult and sufficient oxygen intake becomes difficult. Sometimes more mucus is generated by the cells of the airways and this further worsens the problem. It has been found that out of every 2 children, 1 child misses school due to asthma every year. On the same basis, out of every 3 people, 1 person misses work every year. Because of the seriousness of the disease, those affected by asthma are asked to refrain from running or indulging in excessive strenuous work. In some cases of asthma there is no respiratory difficulty only coughing that occurs at night. Likewise, not every breathing problem is asthma. Therefore, any breathing problem should be got investigated by a specialist. In India about 32.5 million people are affected with asthma. Every 20th newborn baby in India is getting affected by this disease. According to World Health Organisation there are over 300 million people worldwide that are affected with asthma and this number is increasing every year. If this situation is not controlled quickly then by 2025 there will be more than 1 billion people who will be affected by this disease. Asthma cannot be cured but it can be controlled effectively enough for a person to be able to lead a normal life.
