Tinda is an Indian vegetable, not a green leafy vegetable that we usually think of when we talk of vegetables; but a fruit. Immature fruits of the tinda plant are cooked. Tinda is also called as squash melon, round melon, Indian baby pumpkin and Indian round gourd. In Indian vernacular language Marathi it is called dhemase while in Sindhi it is called meha. Tinda belongs to the family of gourds - Cucurbitacea. Tinda is popularly consumed in South Asian countries like India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Tinda is native to India. In areas of late spring frost, the seeds can be sown in pots indoors and kept in a sunny area since they need a soil temperature of 85-90 degrees to sprout into seedlings. Tinda is a pale to medium green colored roundish fruit-vegetable that looks like a miniature pumpkin with a smooth skin, is flattened top and bottom about 2 inches in diameter and 50-60 grams in weight.
